John Lewis to offer unlimited returns

John Lewis is to offer an unlimited refund period in a bid to stimulate sales by giving consumers more confidence to shop.

The department store chain has scrapped the standard 28 day return period so customers can return unwanted purchases and gifts at any time as long as they are unused and accompanied by the receipt.

John Lewis is the first high street retailer to offer an unlimited return period but the move could spark others to follow suit.

arlier this year, John Lewis altered the wording of its 86 year old Never Knowingly Undersold pledge to include more than just price. it said the value of is warranty, service and advice would now be considered as part of the price match comparison.

The Office of National Statistics reported gloomy sales figures last week as February sales fell 0.8%, however John Lewis reported a 1.4% rise in sale to £52.2m for the week to 19 March.

Andrew Murphy, John Lewis retail director told The Telegraph: “We are not doing it so people can clear out their wardrobes. We are doing it to underline to people in economically difficult times that there is one shop you can buy from where you will not end up regretting it.”
