Tesco share rises as Asda dips

ESCO’S market share rose for the first time since November last year, according to Kantar Worldpanel market share data.

For the 12 weeks to 15 May Tesco’s market share rose to 30.7 per cent, from 30.6 per cent. The only other retailer in the top four to increase its share was fourth-placed Morrisons. Its share rose for the third consecutive period to 11.9 per cent, from 11.8 per cent a year earlier.

Sainsbury’s, the UK’s third-largest retailer by market share, saw its market share unchanged at 16.3 per cent. Up until March, Sainsbury’s market share had increased consecutively for 25 periods. Asda, the second biggest, saw its market share slip to 17.2 per cent, from 17.5 per cent. Outside the top four, Waitrose’s market share rose to 4.3 per cent, from 4.1 per cent, according to Kantar, which monitors household grocery purchasing habits. The collective market share of discount retailers Aldi and Lidl rose to six per cent, from 5.4 per cent a year earlier. Edward Garner, communications director at Kantar, said that in the four weeks leading up to 15 May the year-on-year grocery growth rate rose to 7.8 per cent, fuelled largely by Easter shopping, the good weather and, the Royal Wedding.
