Amazon launches UK Appstore

Amazon has announced the launch of its Amazon Appstore in Europe which gives access to its range of Android apps, games and tools for developers.

The online retailer already sells apps through its US Amazon Appstore and is now rolling out the store to customers in the UK, Spain, France, Germany and Italy.

The Appstore will offer a selection of games and apps including established bestsellers like ’Who Wants to be a Millionaire’ and ’Cut the Rope’. It will also feature new apps from brands such as Rovio and Sanrio Digital.

In addition to localised content and a localised mobile store for each specific country, European customers will have access to the ’Free App of the Day’, which offers a paid app for free every day. The Appstore will also offer features such as personalised recommendations, customer reviews and 1-click payments.

Jim Adkins, Vice President of Amazon Appstore, said that the expansion will build on the store’s success in the US.

"Customers in the US have purchased millions of apps, games, in-app items and subscriptions since the store launched last year, and we’ve received great feedback about discovery features like Free App of the Day," said Adkins.

He added: "Amazon has spent years developing innovative features that help customers find and discover the products that are right for them and have applied that know-how to the Amazon Appstore. We’re delighted to extend that experience to our European customers."

Amazon said it will continue to roll out services and features for developers wanting to build, market and monetise their apps and games using Amazon Web Service's infrastructure platform.
