B&Q’s Cheltenham store aims to help make it easier for customers to choose more sustainable products for their homes and gardens, saving money and the planet at the same time.
In-store messaging points customers to products that could help reduce their environmental impact.
Advice and products will be offered on how customers can save money by making energy-efficient changes to their homes and how to encourage nature in their gardens, from peat-free compost to water-reduction techniques and pesticide-free alternatives.
The store is powered by more than 200 rooftop solar panels, and lit by smart LED lighting to help reduce its energy use
B&Q has announced a refurbishment of its Cheltenham store, embodying its commitment to helping to make it easier for customers to create more sustainable homes.
The store is designed to help customers make more sustainable home improvement choices without compromising on quality, convenience, or value.
Tips and guidance are integrated throughout the customer shopping experience in the store and there are two sustainable living displays:
The sustainable home display is all about giving expert advice on how customers could save money by making energy saving improvements to their home. They bring expertise, guidance and product displays right to where customers really need it: at the point of decision-making. These partners include suppliers of energy efficient windows and doors, low-carbon heating solutions like heat pumps that provide steady warmth for homes, solar panels and battery storage, insulation advice and installation, EV chargers for cars at home, as well as smart home control suppliers that help homes use less energy, effortlessly.
The sustainable garden display offers advice on how best to improve drainage and soil quality of flower beds, as well as how to encourage nature. From maximising solar power in your garden, encouraging wildlife through pollinator plants and features such as ponds, bird homes and grow your own edibles, to advice on composting and water saving. The display is designed to help customers create beautiful outdoor spaces that allow them to connect with nature, support wildlife, and garden more sustainably.
Support is available throughout the store and is designed to help make sustainable living as accessible as possible. Information integrated within product displays helps customers identify and choose products with more sustainable features. Currently, 65% of B&Q’s sales come from products that offer sustainability benefits. The store also includes a unique waste station to help customers to dispose of a number of items, including small electrical items, batteries, and plastic plant pots, garden equipment, soft plastics and decorating waste, which helps us dispose of items responsibly and encourage recycling.
As part of the in-store support, B&Q can also confirm all colleagues are sustainability trained by internal accredited Carbon Literacy trainers, equipping them with the know-how and confidence to provide better support to customers.
The store will also spotlight B&Q’s most impactful sustainability initiatives, bringing to life the progress made behind the scenes against B&Q’s Build A Life Project– our commitment to being a more responsible business.
B&Q Cheltenham was selected for the project because it is already one of the retailer’s more sustainable stores. B&Q Cheltenham itself is powered by over 200 roof-top solar panels, and lit by smart LED lighting with movement sensors that dim when no one's around. As well as being home to existing programmes that B&Q run to make sustainable choices easier including: POS promoting Refurb by B&Q - exclusively available at diy.com; tool hire; EV-charging points for customers; and Community Re-use Scheme.
Katherine Paterson, Marketing Director at B&Q said: “We have a strong heritage of doing what we can to reduce our impact on the communities we exist in, as well as the wider environment. Our Cheltenham store has been redesigned to provide impactful, clear and informative in-store support to help customers make more informed decisions that could help them to save money, on energy costs for example, as well as to live a more sustainable life in a more sustainable home.
“Learnings from which initiatives in B&Q Cheltenham have the greatest impact on customer engagement and behaviour, will inform how sustainability is brought to life across our other stores in the future. We want Cheltenham to be a stand-out example of how impactful, clear and informative in-store support can help customers to both save money and lower their sustainable impact.”
