Concern grows over Scotland's first joint Tesco/Dobbies store
SUPERMARKET giant Tesco refused to confirm to the News if the joint Tesco/Dobbies venture at Peel Park was in trouble after another profit warning was issued by the struggling company.
A question mark is hanging over East Kilbride’s planned Tesco after another profit warning was issued by the crisis-hit company.
News emerged last week that the company were to abandon up to 100 supermarket building projects.
A spokesman for Tesco refused to confirm if the joint Tesco/Dobbies venture at Peel Park was among them and said he was not aware of any plans to halt the development.
The official statement from the company went no further than saying: “We’re grateful for the support we’ve received for our plans in East Kilbride and we’ll continue to keep the local community closely updated.”
Plans for the development at Peel Park were given the green light by South Lanarkshire Council back in June when it was revealed around 400 jobs would be created although no timescale for the works was announced.
East Kilbride West Councillor Graham Simpson said: “It is disappointing, though not surprising, that Tesco can’t give a cast iron guarantee that they will go ahead with their development at Peel Park. I was in touch with them recently and was told they may be able to say something in the New Year.
“Given the company’s difficulties, I don’t expect anything to happen soon but we need the jobs – they will bring and the infrastructure improvements.”
