GfK: Sundry growth in DIY
2014 has thus far been a strong year for the majority of decorative sundry categories, with year-on-year growth in both volume and value across a range of categories. A bustling housing market contributes to this development, though is not the only factor.
Comparing January to August 2014 to January to August 2013, there was 4.6% volume (units) growth for DIY adhesives, which yielded 1.7% value growth. The market development was driven by not only by the glues used in serious DIY projects, PVA, floor fixing adhesives and grab adhesives, but also by the crafting end of the market, glue gun sticks.
The first eight months of 2014 saw 6.5% volume (rolls) growth for DIY adhesive tapes. This growth was through the decoration-related masking tapes and mounting tapes, through maintenance-related repair tapes, and multi-functional cloth tapes.
Project work renovating and preparing for decoration has been continuing apace, evidenced by 2.3% volume (units) growth for fillers, and major project work, evidenced by 15.2% volume (units) growth for PU foam. Within fillers, the strongest volume growth segment was within ready mixed fillers, caulk; its appeal as an inexpensive solution means that this segment nonetheless had value decline.
Further DIY project work is evidenced by 5.3% volume (units) growth for sealants, and with silicone sealants continuing to develop their category lead. Growing segments were building, general purpose and sanitary sealants.
Are we brave enough to take on more daunting DIY projects, such as tiling? Tile fixing enjoyed 2.0% volume (units) growth, with powder tile fixing growing strongly enough to offset the decline of ready-mixed formulations.
