Half of Independent Kitchen Retailers Impacted by Supply Chain Issues
Half of independent kitchen retailers surveyed as part of a new study say that supply chain issues have had a significant impact on their business operations.
Commissioned by LDD UK and conducted by Censuswide, the Independent Kitchen Retailer Report 2026 explores the current state of the independent kitchen sector, gathering insight from business decision-makers on the key pressures they face today.
In light of several major distributors exiting the market in recent years, the research revealed concern among retailers and a renewed focus on finding dependable partners to guarantee continuity and stability.
Discussing suppliers and distribution as part of the study, responses confirmed that independents want to prioritise businesses they can trust, and those who understand their needs. In fact, nearly 3 in 5 (57%) of business decision-makers surveyed agreed with the statement ‘Getting the right distributor is essential for the success of my business’.
Already navigating one of the toughest trading environments in recent times, 56% of respondents expressed concern about the stability of distributors, while 50% reported that supply chain issues have significantly affected their business.
Top 5 priorities for suppliers and distributors, according to independent kitchen retailers
When asked about their top priorities when choosing which suppliers and distributors to work with, the top five answers from those surveyed were:
- Clear communication on orders and delays (29%)
- Competitive pricing and terms (27%)
- Product quality and warranty (26%)
- Reliability and on-time delivery (25%)
- Environmental/sustainability practices (24%)
Regionally, Greater London showed a stronger focus on product quality and warranty (34%) compared to the North East (18%). Smaller independents, meanwhile, cited supplier pricing as a higher priority.
Arthur Leaker, Founder and Managing Director of LDD UK, commented: “It’s clear there’s a need for reliable and knowledgeable distribution partners within the independent kitchen retail sector. With over half of businesses surveyed stating that dependable distributor relationships are critical to success in 2026, it’s never been more important for distributors to step up and rebuild trust.
“We’ve always believed that success in this market is built on genuine collaboration, providing consistent supply, technical expertise, and proactive support that retailers can truly depend on. Our focus moving forward is to strengthen these relationships even further, ensuring our partners have the confidence, tools, and service needed to grow their businesses sustainably.”
