IKEA celebrates 40 years in Germany
IKEA is celebrating 40 years in Germany this week and passed two major sales landmarks in the year to end August.
Total sales rose slightly over 3 per cent to reach €4.1bn while the firm’s online store generated sales of €145m, meaning ecommerce has doubled in Germany in less than two years.
The Swedish retailer launched in Germany back in 1974, with this Friday marking exactly 40 years since it opened its first store north of Munich. It now trades from 48 stores in Germany and employs nearly 16,000 people.
IKEA launched in Britain 27 years ago when it opened its first store at Warrington. Today it has 18 UK stores, sales of £1.31bn, and employs over 7,000 people
