MRI: England Game Prompts Significant Retail Footfall Boost
England's dramatic late victory delivered more than just celebrations on Wednesday evening, with new MRI Software data revealing a significant boost in footfall across UK retail destinations as fans headed out to watch the match.
England’s late win saw footfall in UK retail destinations soar by +7.4% week on week driven by high street visits surging +15%. Activity built through the afternoon, with footfall in high streets up +28%, between 2pm - 5pm, compared to the same period the week before, suggesting many headed out early to meet friends, secure a spot at the many fan zones dotted around the country, and soak up the match-day atmosphere before kick-off.
Office dense locations in Central London fared particularly well during this period recording a +31.7% uplift, and the capital itself noted a +46.7% increase in visits week on week highlighting how major sporting events are increasingly becoming social occasions that extend beyond the match itself. Rather than heading straight home, many workers appear to have stayed in town to watch the game in nearby pubs, bars and fan zones, providing a welcome boost to both hospitality and the wider evening economy. This is also reflected in visits rising by an average of +13.3% post 5pm, week on week, in the capital.
The data continues to reinforce how major sporting events are becoming social occasions that extend far beyond the 90 minutes on the pitch. With England's next match kicking off at 1am, we expect activity to shift later into the evening on Sunday and into the early hours, particularly around pubs, bars, and fan zones where extended trading hours will be in place. These late-night spikes could provide a welcome boost to the night-time economy while building a space, and sense of community, where people will want to come back to time and time again.
