  • New research by comparethemarket.com reveals the UK cities where you’re likely to encounter cowboy builders, along with satisfaction scores for each trade
  • One in 12 Brits wouldn’t recommend the contractors that they’ve hired to family and friends
  • Bristol residents have the highest chance of hiring a cowboy builder compared to any other UK city, with almost one in six renovators left feeling unsatisfied with the resulting work

With almost a quarter (24%) of Brits1 opting for help by professionals when it comes to renovating their properties, comparethemarket.com has revealed2 the areas of the UK the most at risk of sub-standard jobs as a result of cowboy builders.

Over half (56%) of those that have had work carried out on their homes share that they’ve had to fork out additional costs to rectify the problems, with over one in 10 (11%) spending between £500 - £749. One in 12 Brits also wouldn’t recommend the contractors that they’ve hired to family and friends, with one resident revealing they had to take their cowboy plumber to a small claims court after they fled with their deposit, resulting in a full refund!

When asked to score their satisfaction from 0 – 5, with 0 being extremely unhappy and the worst service you could imagine, and 5 being extremely happy to the point you can’t ask for anything more, floor fitters and painters and decorators were the highest with an average of 3.5, followed by plumbers (3.4), and builders (3.3).
