Poundland appoints former Tesco director as chairman
Former Tesco big-hitter Andrew Higginson is the new chairman of Poundland.
The appointment of Higginson was announced today. He will work alongside chief executive Jim McCarthy.
Higginson announced his retirement from Tesco at the end of last year after a stint as head of retailing services, including responsibility for Tesco Bank.
“I am excited to be joining Poundland as Chairman and look forward to working with Jim and the team as the company continues its ambitious growth strategy,” said Higginson.
“The company has always impressed me with its focus on delivering value to customers and I believe that there is significant potential to develop and grow Poundland further.”
McCarthy added: “His strategic skills and retail experience will be invaluable as we continue to grow our business in the UK and Ireland, and evaluate a number of other growth opportunities. “
Colin Smith, the discounter’s current chairman, will remain on the board as a non-executive director.
