Retail Job Losses Have Already Reached 10,000 This Year

Closing down (1).jpg

Data from the Centre of Retail Research has revealed that 9,949 retail sector jobs have already been lost this year.

A further 1,400 roles are also at risk since two more retailers - Beales & Hawkin’s Bazaar - fell into administration in the last week.

Jobs, and in some cases, stores, are being shed by Arcadia, ASDA, Debenhams, HMV, Morrisons, Mothercare, and Sainsbury's.

The British Retail Consortium recently reported that 2019 was the worst on record for the retail sector and was the first year to show an overall decline in retail sales.

Online retail did not fare much better, with a good performance in December failing to save the sector from the lowest annual performance seen on record, according to IMRG-Capgemini.
