It has been reported that two Somerset Home Hardware stores - Lanes Home Hardware and Casswells Home Hardware, owned by EE Lane Holdings - have closed.

Midsomer Norton store Caswell’s has closed for business. Shutters went up at the store on Monday afternoon.

Shocked staff were seen leaving the store shortly round about 3pm and it has been reported that they were told the news in a meeting held just after lunch. it is believed that staff were told the company was in liquidation.

Enquiries are being directed to London based RJC Financial Management where Mr Robert Cundy was unavailable for comment.

Caswells Home Hardware is part of Cheddar based E E Lane Holdings. On Monday the Cheddar Lane’s Hardware Store also closes.

The store has been a feature on the High Street for more than 100 years and was known as a hardware, ironmongers and builders merchants.

The builders yard closed some years ago with houses and flats built on the site. A planning application to convert the top floor of the shop into flats is currently before Bath and North East Somerset Council.

Tracey Seymour, who lives near the store, said: “I could not believe it. It’s a very sad day for the High Street and I fear for what will happen to the store now.

“I felt quite choked when I spoke to one of the chap’s who worked there. I feel so sorry for them, they were lovely staff and very friendly”.

Midsomer Norton resident Linda Clifton said she had happy memories of the shop.

She said: “I can remember going in there with my mother. The staff were lovely.”
