Wickes Shares Solar Panel Advice as Homeowner Interest Increases

• New research** reveals a strong interest in renewable energy, with 53% of homeowners stating they are actively looking for properties with solar panels already installed

As more households invest in solar panels, new expert advice has revealed top tips for homeowners on maintaining roof panels and how one common, often overlooked factor could impact efficiency over time*.   

The advice comes as new research from home improvement retailer Wickes** reveals that solar panels are becoming increasingly popular amongst homeowners and those looking for a new home. Currently, 15% of UK homeowners surveyed already have solar panels installed on their homes and over half of those currently looking to buy (53%) say they will actively look for homes with solar. However, despite this, there is still some confusion on how to maintain their efficiency.        

The research found that when asked what had the biggest negative impact on the performance of solar panels, nearly one in five (18%) stated low sunlight, whilst over one in 10 (13%) commonly mentioned the angle and orientation of the panels.   

David Draper, CEO of Wickes Solar, has revealed that shading is in fact one of the most common and manageable factors that can reduce energy output across the system:  

“With interest in solar energy increasing, there are a few simple tips for homeowners to keep in mind once the system is up and running.  

“Shading is one of the key factors that solar users should be aware of. On many traditional string systems, significant shade on even one panel can reduce output across the wider system, so things like overhanging branches from fast-growing trees can have a real impact on generation over time. That said, shading doesn't have to be a barrier to solar. For properties where some shade is unavoidable, power optimisers can help ensure that unshaded panels continue to generate at their maximum potential, even if one panel is affected.”  

“It’s not just seasonal growth homeowners should be mindful of. Our research also found that over a quarter of those who own solar panels (27.5%) admit they have never cleaned their panels, and over time this means that dust, decomposing leaves, bird droppings and grime can build up and create a physical barrier on the glass, reducing the light absorbed.” 

To help homeowners maximise their solar investment, Wickes Solar has shared top tips for keeping solar panels clear and improving solar panel efficiency:  

• Keep an eye on new shade: Trees, hedges and nearby structures can change over time, so it's worth occasionally checking that your panels continue to receive as much direct sunlight as possible, particularly during spring and summer when plant growth is at its fastest.   

• Stay on top of garden maintenance: Simple tasks such as pruning trees and trimming hedges can help reduce shading and support your solar panels' performance.   

• Monitor energy generation: Many modern solar systems come with monitoring apps, making it easy to keep an eye on performance. If you notice a gradual drop in generation, it could be worth checking whether growing vegetation or debris is affecting sunlight reaching the panels.   

• Seek professional advice if needed: If you notice a sustained drop in performance or your panels appear particularly dirty, a qualified specialist can assess the system and carry out any necessary maintenance safely.
