Argos to Launch its Own Marketplace
Retail Week has reported that Argos is to launch its own marketplace and the Argos website appears to confirm the news, with a page offering suppliers the opportunity to register their interest in the opportunity.
The Retail Week report said that Argos would offer a "wider range of product," from “a curated range of partners in complementary and existing categories.” A spokesperson added, “more choice, more convenience and more reasons to shop with confidence.”
In its Q3 trading update, Sainsbury's - parent company to Argos - noted that sales at the multichannel retailer were down 1% in the 16 weeks to 3 January 2026, and down 2.2% over the key Christmas trading period (6 weeks ended 3 January 2026).
A marketplace offering would seem a positive next step to support the 'More Argos, More Often' tenet of Sainsbury's strategic plan to reinvigorate the business. Argos already offers a number of 'Supplier Direct Fulfilled' products, revealing in the Q3 trading update that sales of these goods were up 24%.
Last year, speculation grew over a potential sale to China's JD.com, but Sainsbury's confirmed in September 2025 that discussions had ended, as revised terms were not in the best interests of the company, employees, or shareholders.
The trading update said, 'The Argos transformation plan continues to make progress, delivering volume growth across the whole quarter despite significant headwinds from online traffic trends, a tough and promotional general merchandise market and weak consumer confidence.'
A page on the Argos website displays the following text:
Be one of the first to join the UK’s next big Marketplace!
Over the next twelve months, we’re taking an exciting next step to increase customer choice at Argos. If you are a marketplace seller in the UK looking for early access to sell with us, then please complete this short questionnaire.
So that we stay true to the quality, trust and service our customers love us for, we will be carefully assessing seller interest to ensure we maintain our high customer standards.
When we have completed our review and confirmed we could be a great match for each other, one of our team will be in touch to agree the next steps.
The form asks potential suppliers to provide full business and contact information, along with details of the primary product categories; how goods would be fulfilled; number of units it anticipates selling through the channel; average delivery times, and whether the stock is based in the UK. It also asks if the supplier is active on any other marketplaces, and requests details of the primary platform used in their business.
