B&Q Ireland's Sprucefield store to stay open
B&Q has confirmed that its Sprucefield store in Lisburn, Ireland will remain open, saving around 72 jobs.
In 2015, Kingfisher announced the planned closure of several Irish stores including Ballymena, Belfast (Boucher Road), Craigavon and Derry.
Local MP Jeffrey Donaldson met with Kingfisher executives in 2015 to try to convince them to keep the store open, arguing that they should wait until other stores closed and wait and see what impact that would have on the Lisburn store.
Upon hearing the news that the store was to remain open, he told Belfast Live: “I am delighted that B&Q have decided to retain their store in Sprucefield safeguarding the 72 jobs.
“I felt strongly that there was a case for keeping Sprucefield open.
“As predicted there’s been a significant upturn in business there following the closure of Craigavon and Boucher Road and I must commend the management and staff at Sprucefield who’ve worked really hard and are being rewarded with this great news.”
“Sprucefield is an excellent location and it would be an ideal location for a John Lewis store coming forward.”
A B&Q spokesperson said: “In 2015, we announced that B&Q is reshaping our store network to ensure that our estate reflects changing consumer needs and behaviours, and announced a number of store closures. We have continued to review our plans and can confirm that we have today let our 72 employees at B&Q Sprucefield know their store will no longer be closing.
“We have a fantastic team at our Sprucefield store and their passion to serve our customers well will help us to now grow our business.”
