Garden Centre Sales Declined By 46% In January
The HTA Market Update reveals that overall garden centre sales were down -46% from January 2020 levels. Gardening sales were down -17%, while non gardening was down -60% with restaurants closed due to Coronavirus.
January of last year was a very strong month, January 2021 was the coldest January for 11 years, and the wettest for 5 years with one weekend hit with widespread snow.
There were some bright spots, seed sales were up +10% and plant care products improved by +2%. Heating and BBQ sales increased by +109%. The HTA suggests consumers might be looking to extend the home into the garden, despite colder weather.
Plant sales fell by over -40%.
The survey also shows the majority of British adults (63%) are confident visiting garden centres, however this is the lowest the figure has been since the HTA started tracking it in August last year.
