MRI: Shoppers Were Out In Force On Tuesday 23rd December

As shoppers make a final push for gifts and groceries, this week’s footfall data reveals a strong week-on-week uplift across UK retail destinations. However, compared to last year, high streets and shopping centres are still seeing lower numbers, while retail parks stand out with a modest 0.9% year-on-year rise.

Insights and commentary from Jenni Matthews, Data Analyst at MRI Software, follow:

Week-on-week footfall data shows shoppers out in force as they make a final dash for festive gifts and grocery essentials. However, year-on-year footfall remains subdued across both high streets and shopping centres, with retail parks the only destination type to record a modest 0.9% increase. This likely reflects ongoing cost-of-living pressures, which may have encouraged consumers to shop earlier in the season, taking advantage of pre-Christmas promotions to spread the cost rather than leaving purchases to the final weeks.
