Research Reveals Extent Of Business-Related Stress For UK Tradespeople

  • New research from Mira Showers has found that tradespeople are feeling overwhelmed in their jobs, with additional work responsibilities, and a lack of support, contributing to business stress

More than one in five tradespeople in the UK feel overwhelmed on the job, with 71% admitting to feeling burnt out after working too many hours, according to new research from Mira Showers.

The research, which surveyed 500 sole traders across the UK, has found that over a quarter (27%) of tradespeople feel stressed running their business, with 63% saying they often struggle with the business and administrative side of their roles.

These additional admin tasks often eat into tradespeople’s weekends and personal time, with an alarming 80% feeling they are pressured to work more hours a week than they feel they should.

Often operating as a one-person-band, tradespeople are prone to taking on the brunt of the financial roles required for operating a business, with 51% responsible for managing tax returns, invoices and receipts, with 31% also taking on the running of their business’ social media accounts.

However, almost half (48%) of sole traders surveyed via OnePoll are entirely self-taught and often lack official training, with 60% stating they have previously looked for support in the areas of their business they struggle with. Despite this, 31% say they lack the budget to justify receiving support, while almost a quarter (24%) say they lack the information of which solutions may be best for them.

Mira Showers commissioned the research to shine a light on the challenges tradespeople can face when running their businesses, which often goes beyond on-site work and outside of specialisms they have been trained in.

As part of its mission to support its installer community, Mira Showers has pledged its commitment to do more than just provide them with high-quality products. Instead, it is taking a new approach to the content it provides on its InstallerPRO platform – available for any installer to sign up to – where it will be sharing practical advice to help master their business, elevate their skills and balance their life.

Daniel Martin, Installer Channel Communications at Mira Showers said:  "It can be tricky for sole traders to manage workload. Long days at work and relying on a workforce of one, can lead to feelings of isolation.

"One of the biggest unseen factors in this, is when the physical job is done, there are still a lot of business and admin tasks left to do. That’s why we’re passionate about using the InstallerPRO platform to provide installers with practical, useful advice that will hopefully streamline these tasks.

“As the research has shown, installers often feel like they’re tackling the business world on their own. The InstallerPRO platform is about helping installers achieve a better balance and showing them that they’re not going at it alone.”

Mira Showers’ research has highlighted the significant impact a lack of support is having on tradespeople in the UK, with a third stating that their social lives and sleep quality have been negatively impacted due to the amount of hours they work.

Installers can sign up to InstallerPRO, where they can gain access to business tips, insights from industry experts and even Mira Showers product promotions.
