Diane Wehrle, Springboard Marketing and Insights Director, has revealed Springboard's bank holiday weekend footfall forecast.

Springboard forecasts that footfall for the August Bank Holiday Weekend will be 6.5% higher compared to last year, with the greatest increase of +7.2% on Saturday.

The reasons for this include the warm and dry weather forecast, and an increase in both overseas and domestic tourists – a consequence of the fallen pound.

In recent weeks we have seen better performance across all three retail destination types compared with 2015, particularly on high streets; footfall rose +1% over the last three weeks compared with the same period last year when footfall dropped -3.3%.

The greatest rises are forecast in external shopping destinations – high streets and retail parks – of +7.3% and +8%. Shoppers gravitate to these locations when the weather is favourable.

Last year over the August Bank Holiday weekend, footfall in coastal towns rose by +15.8% compared with the August Bank Holiday weekend in 2014, so increased leisure activity in these areas is likely to benefit the high street.

Footfall in shopping centres is also forecast to increase (by +3.5%), but with the opportunity to enjoy the sunshine a driving force for Bank Holiday trips, it is natural that high streets and retail parks will see more of an uplift.
