Springboard: High Streets Drive Marginal Rise In Footfall

Springboard has published retail footfall data for week 31 (31/07 - 06/08) advising that the marginal rise in footfall was driven wholly by high streets, which benefited from the warm weather.
Springboard Retail Park Index - Week 31 2022
2022 vs 2021 = -1.3%
2022 vs 2019 = -3.5%
Week-on-week = -1.0%
Springboard's Marketing and Insights Director, Diane Wehrle, said:
Footfall rose marginally across UK retail destinations last week from the week before, however, all of the rise was driven by high streets which benefited from the warm - but not extremely hot - weather, whilst in retail parks and shopping centres footfall declined.
Nearly all types of town benefited last week, although the uplifts in activity were relatively modest. The winners were coastal towns which gained from the demand created by the school summer break, and Central London where the rise in footfall from the week before was nearly twice that in regional city centres outside of the capital.
Whilst some of the rise in footfall in Central London will have been due to an increase in tourism - both domestic and overseas - the Central London "Back to the Office" benchmark rose by a third more than footfall in Central London as a whole, indicating that the number of employees working from their offices continued to rise.
Results were mixed in different areas across the UK last week, with declines in most geographies, although the West Midlands was the clear winner with footfall experiencing a huge boost from the Commonwealth Games.
