Springboard: Last Week's Footfall Increased Fourfold

Springboard has confirmed that retail footfall increased fourfold last week, helped by rises in London.

Springboard's Marketing and Insights Director, Diane Wehrle, said: "It seems that the increased quarantine measures imposed last week on a number of overseas destinations are having a positive impact on UK footfall. Footfall in UK retail destinations last week not only rose on a week on week basis, but the uplift was more than four times as large as the week before, and two and a half times as large as the same week last year.

"The outcome is a further incremental recovery in footfall compared with 2019, and the sixteenth consecutive week in which the annual decline has lessened. Footfall rose in all but two areas of the UK, but the greatest benefit was brought about by noticeable rises from the week before in London and the South East, the two areas which generate the greatest volumes of footfall of anywhere in the UK; in Greater London the uplift from the week before was four times as great as last year and in the South East it was three times as great.

"Despite this, high streets remain adversely impacted by the lack of footfall in Central London and other UK regional cities, with smaller more local high streets and those appealing to holiday makers recovering to a greater extent."
